I had a conversation today that stuck with me. Jan (Greg’s Wife), Jake (The other intern here at the farm) and I were talking about Holistic Management. We were talking about developing your Holistic goal, which is a set of goals that guides all of the decisions you make on your farm/ranch. It can easily be applied to anyone’s life, even if they are a Lawyer in New York City. Your Holistic Goal is a frame work for decision making. As it turns out, Jan made a really great point that I’d like to share with you.
While we were talking about decision making, the subject of couples/Marriage came up. Jan made a great analogy about decision making and goals. She said something to the effect of, “You and your wife are horses, but you are pulling a carriage. This carriage represents your marriage and life together. Are you both pulling the carriage in the same direction, toward the same goal/destination? Or are you both slightly pulling to the sides, going where you want to go?”
This got me thinking. My wife and I have talked about our goals in general, and have even been through the process of making a Holistic Goal together. But, we haven’t talked about the process that went into developing our Holistic Goal, or what those goals are in while. What are we doing? Where are we going? Where do we want to be in five years? Ten? 50?
The winter time is great for recovering from the hard work of the spring/summer. I think it would behoove us all to take a minute and sit down with everyone not just our spouses/partners, and talk about our goals. What direction do we want our lives to take? Are you happy with your life?
If somethings not right, change it. It’s really that easy. Talk to each other and change it. Jan also mentioned some people she knew that went through this process and it completely changed their lives. Communication, it’s powerful stuff.
Take a minute, sit down, and talk. Remember, both of you are pulling the carriage. Are you headed in the same direction?
